Insurance sector in Bangladesh emerged after independence with state-owned- one General, one Life and one foreign life insurance company. Consistent with the privatization policy the world over, the Government of Bangladesh took a decision in 1984 to allow operation of insurance companies in the private sector side by side with state-owned. As a result, a number of companies in the private sector start functioning under Insurance Act 2010. At present number of insurance companies are:

01(one) State-owned, 42 (forty two): Private, 03 (three) Private Islamic
Life Insurance Company
01(one) State-owned, 21 (twenty one) Private, 08 (eight) Islamic, 01(one) Foreign
